The basic irrefutable premise is this, man and woman are greedy and do not like to be without the comforts that make life better, easier and more enjoyable. This ideal may run counter to some, in theory as much as their hubris. To expect that we can man-handle the climate is absurd and nothing less than impossible requiring hundreds of trillions of dollars and the most radical mining of ore and rare earth minerals ever undertaken by mankind to reach a self-imposed target of zero emissions. The specter of global warming may shu-shu just as the ice age of the 1960’s did, or it may be a cyclic natural occurring phenomenon. Certainly, earth is used to climate change.
Therefore, to assuage our use of fossil fuels for manufacturing, transportation, fertilizer, plastics and the like and in our quest to manipulate the atmosphere we will have to embrace the very thing deemed to be the culprit. We will have to use affordable, available and reliable fossil fuels, coal, oil and natural gas to provide the necessities we have become accustomed to and ensure that the energy transition works. If we want to drive across the country or take a mediterranean cruise or receive proper medical care, make a gumbo, use lipstick or have a good cup of coffee we will use fossil fuels.
American security and domestic tranquility have long been our hallmarks and today they seem to be under siege more than ever. My contention is that barring WW III the siege today is first cousin to the sieges of yesterday.
Billy Joel’s iconic song “We Didn’t Start the Fire” chronicles post WW II history as a continuous fire caused by the process of geopolitical struggle and change. Stalin, Sputnik, Marlyn Monroe, the Polio vaccine and AIDS crisis to name a few took place in a short forty-year period.
